Meet Dr. Helen M. Ra<\/span>n<\/span>ney,<\/span> <\/span>physician<\/span> and hematologist<\/span>. <\/span>Born in <\/span>1920, <\/span>Dr. Ranney<\/span> dedicated her work to researching blood disorders<\/span>. Her groundbreaking work on sickle<\/span> <\/span>cell anemia included the first description of abnormal blood cell structure and genetic factors, earning her the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Medical Achievement Award in 1972.<\/span> <\/span>Dr. Ranney was<\/span> also<\/span> the first woman president of the Association of American Physicians. <\/span>Let’s<\/span> take a moment<\/span><\/span> to<\/span> <\/span>celebrate<\/span> Dr. Ranney for the work she has done on behalf of<\/span> the sickle cell <\/span>community!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
